October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The American Cancer Society encourages women, especially older women and underserved populations, to make an appointment for a screening mammorgram.
The American Cancer Society estimates that 182,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 46,000 women will die from this disease. In Virginia, 4,400 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year and 1,100 Virginia women will die of breast cancer, the second major cause of cancer death in women next to lung cancer.
Mammogram screening is the single best means of early detection of breast cancer and is crucial for women over 50 years of age. Additionally, women should see a health care provider for regular clinical breast examinations and practice
