An amendment to restore full funding to the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service has-gained enough patrons in the General Assembly to nearly guarantee the county’s extension office will remain open.
By the end of last week 76 of 100 members of the House of Delegates, including Del. Jay Kat/en. R-3 1 st District, and 20 of 40 state senators, including Sen. Kevin Miller, R-26th District, had signed as co2Dpatrons to the amendment that would restore nearly $14.6 million to the Extension Service and the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Stations.
I his will not only restore the cuts Gov. George Allen submitted in his budget amendments but will also restore the $600,000 cut already in the two2Dyear budget.
The justification for the amendment notes that dollars invested in agriculture return SI.50 for each SI invested. Agriculture and related industry employ s a high percentage of Virginia's working people, the justification states. •
