To the Editor:
I am writing to add-my voice to the^growing chorus of people who are disturbed by the tone and the timing of the Jan. 4 article on special education.
By examining only the costs and not the benefits of these programs, the article exhibited a clear and inflammatory bias against serving the needs of disabled students.
Then, to add insult to injury, the paper last week ran a despicable cartoon in which special education is represented as a large bucket filled to the brim while “the rest” get a puny pail. But the figures in the Jan. 4 article don’t bear this out. Special education receives $750,000 out of a budget of 5.65 million, or 13%; it serves 169 students out of a students population of about 1,000, or 17%. This hardly seems disproportionate.
