The Town Council adopted a resolution intended to assist Trinity Episcopal Church in expanding at its present site.
Ma>or Stewart Willis brought the resolution to the council earlier this month, saying he had had discussions with “several" members of the church indicating that town ordinances would make it difficult to expand on the current site. He moved for its adoption.
Mayor Willis’s resolution said, “It is hereby resolved that, to the extent of its authority, the Town Council will work cooperatively and constructively with Trinity Episcopal Church in the resolution of issues associated with the church's growth at its Gay Street site. The council will further encourage the commissions and boards of the town to similarly support the church.”
He said, “I’d like them to know that we are willing to work with them. We’re not going to just say ‘yes’ to everything. We are constrained by rules and so forth, but we are interested in their problems, and we’d like to be cooperative with them."
Council member Reinhardt Lynch asked if the resolution should not equally apply to other churches in town or to businesses. “Why are you singling them out?" he asked.
