Wakefield Country was my pick for my son for the current semester until I decided to give Rappahannock Elementary one last look. Rappahannock Elementary hadn’t fared well when I first visited in December. A firstgrade teacher had been showing Walt Disney's “Jungle Book” cartoon when I showed up for my scheduled visit. - She chatted with me about her regular class schedule while the video was running, but offered no explanation for the video until I asked.
“We’re moving to a new room tomorrow, and I needed time to pack up the classroom,” she said.
Maybe so, maybe so, but still...
On my return trip, I inwardly groaned when my son and I walked into Geraldine Payne’s kindergarten class and saw the children watching a video. This time, I asked immediately: “How often do you use videos?”
Mrs. Payne replied that she uses this particular video program every Friday for a half hour. “It helps the children with their letters and phonics,” Mrs. Payne said. Less frequently, she uses filmstrips and videos that are connected to a particular topic she’s exploring.
