Don’t ask me which ones are which, though. All the kids seem to be prospering under her gentle, lo\ing care. Mrs. Payne has taught the children the rudiments of sign language, and she uses the signs to magically communicate—she can quiet her class with a hand gesture. Mrs. Payne explained that she had learned sign language to communicate with a deaf child whom she had-expected to receive. The deaf child never came, but Mrs. Payne enjoyed signing, so she kept it up.
She shifts focus as smoothly as a zoom lens, somehow keeping everyone in her field of vision: My questions got answered, my son got included, the girl in pink had her tears dabbed, and the boy in the Power-Rangers shirt was given a new word to learn.
