In my school visits, I found that the ratio of fantastic to indifferent teachers (I saw no downright rotten ones) had nothing to do with the type of school or the amount of tuition paid. The worst teacher I saw was in a small class at an expensive private school; one of the best was at Rappahannock Klementary School facing a huge class.
High Marks for Highland
In my first round of visits in early December, I had liked Highland School in Warrenton the best. It had a balanced, wholesome approach to education. The kids appeared to be learning as much as they did anywhere, but they seemed to have fun, too. They weren’t deluged with unnecessary work, one example being “homework that is designed to impress the parents paying the tuition, but that isn’t necessary for actual learning."
