RICHOND — After an unusually long legislative session when Democratic lawmakers saw many of their spending plans approved, Gov. George Allen managed to find a little redemption as the Democratcontrolled General Assembly suffered one defeat after another during last Wednesday’s veto session.
The most anticipated showdown — and one of only a few budget battles — came early when the House failed to override Gov. Allen’s veto on Goals 2000, the highly publicized federal funding package for public schools.
The governor has contended for two years that accepting the nearly $7 million would allow federal bureaucrats to manipulate the policy of Virginia educators.
