In this case, it would serve us well to pay close attention to the opinion of our School Board chairman, who after leading the exercise of cutting $118,000 from the proposed budget, warned that any more cuts could adversely affect the learning process itself. Like our Board of Supervisors, our School Board has genuine credibility and a sincere commitment to doing what is best for our community, all things considered. The cuts it made include administrative and faculty positions in addition to instructional materials. In education, it doesn’t get much deeper than that.

This, is a sensitive issue in our county, a county in which all of us want low density and low taxes all within 90 minutes of our nation’s capital. But we must deal with reality and do the right thing. The world is getting smaller, and an investment in our children’s education is an investment in 'this country’s competitiveness. The more self-reliant our children are the less it will cost us all in the long run.

We are fortunate to have a very dedicated faculty and administration and a fantastic group of volunteers supporting our school system. Our faculty and administration have committed themselves to doing all they can to make Rappahannock County schools the schools of choice. Their professionalism and maturity go well beyond merely meeting “contractual” requirements.
