Crew member Ronnie Parker, who lives near Ben Venue, says the county would simply stay dirty if it weren’t for volunteer cleaners. “We would be able to clean one or two spots one season, and a couple of others the next, but we wouldn’t be able to cover the whole county at one time and get our other work done.”
Beer and soft drink containers accounted for the bulk of the trash around Laurel Mills, said Gary Light, who spent eight hours picking up trash on Route‘618 last Saturday.
“1 don’t understand why people can’t just toss their trash on the floors of their pickups and clean them out at the end of the week,” said Bill Fannon, who cleaned alongside Mr. Light. “That’s what I do.”
Orange, heavy-duty bags are provided free by VDOT to any individual or group willing to clean Rappahannock’s roadsides or illegal dump sites..
Phone Hunt Harris at the Ragged Mountain Resource Center at 6751879 to obtain bags and to be eligible for a $100 cleanup prize offered by the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection in a contest; that runs through Sunday, April 28. If Mr. Harris cannot be reached, you can also obtain bags from many of the general stores in the county and from VDOT in Washington at 6753612.
