Midway through their seasons the high school’s soccer teams are struggling.
After getting off to a rousing start with a win over Warren County away, the varsity managed only a 1 to 1 tie with Warren County at home and has dropped games to James Wood and Central 2 to 0.
The junior varsity is looking for its first win. That is understandable because they .have been facing generally older more experienced players. On Wednesday they face a St Luke’s a team that is actually even younger.
Last week they lost to Fauquier 7 to 1. “We had a bad day,” Coach Mark Pace said. “The competition is stiff. We’re playing out of our age and size group.”
He sees improvement in his team as they get used to the competition, however. Most of his players are eighth graders. Some of them have experience in travel leagues, but many do not. Several of his players are girls, and they are playing teams from schools that have separate girls’ teams.
“I think they’re getting something out of it,” he said of his players.
Of the varsity team’s 2 to 0 loss to Central, Coach Kenny Rogers said, “I don’t have any excuses. We didn’t score and they did. I thought we controlled the ball most of the game. Sooner or later we’ve got to come up with something.” He said of his team, “I think we were a better team than Central today. We controlled the ball better, but we didn’t finish.”
