To the Editor:

Is there anyone reading this who is not aware that the federal government is overburdened with a huge deficit?

Yet the federal government continues to borrow $1 billion a day in order to keep up the pretense of prosperity.

The federal government spends money as if it really has it to spend, using tax dollars and borrowed money to pay for programs that generate votes and lull people into complacency.

Our Rappahannock School Board recently voted to participate in the federal government’s Goals 2006 program for the expressed purpose of getting $4,000 to $6,000. 1

Where is this money really coming from? We know the U.S. budget is in the red. We know it will have to borrow money to send it to us. We know that taxpayers will have to pay it back with interest in the form of federal taxes.

Does it make sense for the federal government to tax people in Rappahannock in order to give it back to us in the form of a Goals 2000 grant?

The average person willltdll you that having the federal government tax us in order to give money back doesn’t make much sense. The money should stay right here in the first place.

But if you were the federal government, it makes a lot of sense. That’s because it takes a cut of the money to hire bureaucrats to manage Goals 2000. That means more jobs for political supporters. Plus, it gives the federal government control over our schools.

Why would our School Board want to do this in return for a few thousands of dollars?

It doesn’t make sense to me, especially when you consider that the federal government must borrow the money, and that we must repay it in the form of higher taxes.

Each School Board member owes an explanation for their actions to the people in Rappahannock County.

If they didn’t understand what they were doing, fine. Then take another vote to reverse the decision to participate in Goals 2000.
