Harald Havstad, 54, of Sperry ville pleaded guilty by way of an Alford plea last Thursday that he had caused or encouraged acts rendering a child to be in need of services, which is a misdemeanor.

In the plea agreement with the Commonwealth, by taking the Alford plea, Mr. Havstad did not acknowledge that he is guilty of the misdemeanor, but entered the guilty plea because he considered it in his best interest to do so.

Mr. Havstad was originally indicted last May for the misdemeanor and two felonies: aggravated sexual battery on a child less than 13 years of age and taking indecent liberties with a child who was less than 14 years of age. The two felonies have been dismissed.
