According to State Trooper Mike Woodard, who investigated the accident, both cars, one a 1983 Buick Regal and the other a 1986 Toyota Corolla, were travelling between 35 and 40 mph when they met on a hill crest in the narrow gravel road. He said that speed and inexperience in driving on that road contributed to the accident. He feels that the maximum safe speed for that stretch of road is 25 mph.
The most seriously injured of the seven, both 17 year-old boys, remained hospitalized in UVA Hospital in Charlottesville on Monday. Both had been the back seat passengers in the Toyota, wearing lap belts, and they suffered severe back injuries. One lives in Washington and has a compression fracture of the fifth lumbar vertebrae, a fractured pelvis and facial lacerations. The other boy, who was visiting from out of town, has a' compression fracture of the third lumbar vertebrae, a broken jaw, facial lacerations, and he also lost several teeth.
The boy from Washington is expected to return home later this week, but wilt be in a plastic body cast
