Varsity Gets
In Shape
By SHARON KILPATRICK
Rappahannock News StafT Writer
Coach' Laura Conklin is trying to get her varsity girls’ basketball team ready for the start of the season.
She has 10 girls out for the team, and, she has plenty of experience on the squad. Seven are seniors, two juniors and one a freshman.
Freshman Sonya Wiggington and juniors Julie Atkins and Tiffany Keys will be blended into a team of seniors, Dawn Havstad, Kylene Wolfe, Sarah Gentry, Angie Atkins, Nerissa Roberts, Jennifer Woodward and Tracey Thomas.
Coach Conklin said her main problem last year was the lack of a true point guard. Angie was asked to play the position but she was “frustrated a lot” in that spot Coach Conklin said.
“Sonya helps us out in that area. She has a lot of potential and a lot of skills that just need to be developed,’ she said.
She is not yet prepared to say that Sonya Wiggington will start at poinl guard, but it appears likely.
Coach Conklin acknowledges she has a lot of experienced guards with forwards Sarah Gentry, Dawn Havstad and Jennifer Woodward. “With sc many guards and only a couple of big people we will have a motion offense with just one in the middle, most often Dawn,” she said.
She said in terms of basketball skills this year’s varsity is starting ahead of last year’s. “The main thing I’m concerned about now is getting them in shape. They lived pretty comfortably over the summer,” Coach Conklin said.
