professionals nominated Rene to be one of 10 Southeast Artists represented at the 1996 Olympics, under the aegis of the Olympic Committee of Georgia. His surreal works, evocative of Chirico and Magritte, are in collections in Europe, the United States, Mexico and the Far East. His student sculpture is in the collection of the Chicago Art Institute.
In judging the 1994 Artists’ National, Dr. Henry Adams, Curator of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, stated Mr. Ruffner’s painting conveys “. . .a delicacy of color and powerful sense of mood.” Mr. Ruffner’s work is perhaps best understood through his thoughts on art: that it is not a luxury, but often the most direct and urgent reflection of our times. He believes that the most interesting art engages the viewer’s minds, “rippling the waters.” Mr. Ruffner’s meticulous canvases reflect his conviction that lasting art requires an investment of time and self.
