When retired Judge Rayner V. Snead set out to record the history of Washington Baptist Church, he found he had undertaken more than he had planned. So he turned the project over to his son-in-law Rob Hewitt, a fulltime writer, the husband of his daughter Libby and father of five of his and Lois Snead's grandchildren.
Working with church records, the Rappahannock Historical Society, the Culpeper Library, and the Virginia State Library and Archives, Mr. Hewitt produced a 174-page book, Seeds of Faith: Growing a Church in the Blue Ridge Mountains, published .at the end of 1996.
It records more than the history of the local church itself. Starting with the efforts of Baptists to practice their faith in the face of thosd determined to hold onto power in the name of the established Anglican Church in Virginia, Mr. Hewitt traces the history of Baptist congregations in the entire area, the preachers who faced jail for their faith, the coming of religious liberty to Virginia, the building of various Baptist churches in what became Rappahannock County, and the construction of the current church building in cooperation with the Masons as a mission of
