Cancer Unit

Works Hard

To the Editor: • As a member of the American Cancer Soceity Board, Rappahannock Unit and secretary, I want to thank the Rappahannock News for printing the news concerning Ester Settle's award as our Volunteer of the Year.

It may surprise people to know that the award is not automatically given just because a unit has nominated someone. The American Cancer Society has a rigorous set of guidelines which must be met in order for the award to be given. Our unit takes great pride in having won the award two years in a row, in 1995 with Carole Miller and this year with Ester Settle. Moreover, our unit has again been awarded a plaque citing us for our fund raising. Our 1996 efforts were rewarded with a total of $21,327 raised by this unit alone. We stand about seventh in the state in per capita fund raising.
