This handsome little book makes for interesting reading. Of particular interest for this reader is the history of a period in this century when after struggling for the right to worship separately, the Baptists, Episcopalians and Methodists in the Town of Washington found themselves needing to worship together if they wanted regular services.
None of these congregations could support a full-time minister. They worked out an arrangement by which services were held in the Baptist church two Sundays per month, in the Episcopal church two Sundays a month and in the Methodist church whenever a month had five Sundays. Furthermore the choir was a joint effort including members of all three congregations who traveled to wherever services were being held on a particular Sunday.
Fortunately this ecumenical spirit still prevails in the town and county as congregations from various denominations unite for vacation Bible schools, Lenten programs and Thanksgiving services.
