Mr. Mathews said, “We hope to get the market back on its feet.” Virginia Livestock is closer for Rappahannock farmers than the one many used to travel to in Marshall, and that is a big plus for local farmers. Previously, the stockyards where Virginia Livestock auction service is now were known as Tri-County.
Mr. Mathews said that Front Royal was the main market for livestock 10 or 15 years ago for Rappahannock farmers. Virginia Liyestock will offer a complete line of market services. Mr. Mathews and co-owners/operators Gary Vance and Hetty Thompson are available to visit local farms and help farmers decide the most profitable way to sell their livestock.
A couple of weeks ago John Marshall Clark of Sperryville sold 49 heifers through Virginia Livestock. He said that Mr. Mathews came to his farm, they loaded the heifers and took them to Front Royal for weighing. “The prices are coming up some,” said Mr. Clark.
Mr. Clark, who said he has been farming “ever since I was big enough to run after a cow,” raises mostly Angus and has some Angus/Charolais. At Virginia Livestock, said Mr. Clark, they know how to sell cattle. Going to Front Royal will be closer than taking them to Madison, which is what he did for over ten years. “I think it will be a good place. I recommend it,” said Mr. Clark.
