more than birds is indicative of his following in Audubon’s tradition of understanding nature as a wholesome
of his most beautiful pictures are of water birds — ducks, an Egret, a Cormorant, Laughing Gulls, an Ibis, a Great Yellowlegs, and a Little Blue Heron. In some instances, the watery setting of these birds enhances their interest, and in the case of the Double-crested Cormorant, the silvery gray sticks where the bird stands are similar to the silvery gray throat of this elegant creature.
Two pictures of Cardinals are especially delightful — one brooding in the snow, the other, perhaps a young bird, with feathers ruffled from bathing. This latter is my
