Forty-five members of the RCHS senior class and four chaperones left on their class ski trip to Seven Springs in Pennsylvania on Monday afternoon.
They all piled into a Trailways bus, and a van from the sheriff’s office was packed with extra ski equipment, snowboards and suitcases.
Bryant Lee, one of the chaperones who has gone on every one of the ski trips since their inception in 1990, said that a big part of the trip is educational. Last year only about 20 percent of the students actually skied, he said. The educational program at Seven Springs will include learning to run the snowmaking machines, learning about how the kitchen works and learning the business end of a ski area.
Besides skiing, many other activities are available: bowling, golfing, racquetball, volleyball, ice skating and soccer.
The students pay for their own trip, and some of that money has been raised during the past year by selling pizza, candy bars and by washing cars.
The bus trip lasts about four hours, and the group plans on returning to Rappahannock on Sunday. This year’s chaperones are Vicki Eastham, Bryant Lee, Mike Tupper and Freida Herman.
