on the stomach, which results in vomiting. He only has about 16 percent of his heart functioning now. He can’t eat, or sleep, or breath. He looks better than he is because he has been so active all his life,” Ruth said.
Mr. Embrey is a single parent who went into farm management so he could be there for his three daughters as they were growing up. His family and daughters have been wonderfully supportive Ruth said, but there is a problem.
Mr. Embrey pays about $440 per month for insurance and that insurance will only cover $50,000 per year toward transplants and follow up treatment.
The transplant will cost $150,000 and that does not include before and after hospital costs and medication.
He may have to wait in the hospital until a heart becomes available and those costs add up. There is a transplant patient whom he met last week while in the hospital. The man is on the waiting list and has been hospitalized for five months.
“As you get sicker you move up the list,” Ruth said. ‘To get a transplant you have to match blood type and body size. The transplant donor has to be brain dead and on life support. That is different than for other donor organs. There is a four hour window for moving the heart from one place to another and transplanting it. So theC.dbiior heart*would have to come from east of the Mississippi or from the east coast.”
Charles said he has been approved by all the members of the board and will go next week for final workups to enter the final statistics needed to get him on the list. “I don’t know where I’ll be on it though, but they’ll tell me everything next week they said.”
Ruth said the experience has been overwhelming for the family. “Charles is quiet and never complains. I think his lifestyle has helped him because he’s in pretty good shape otherwise:’
His daughters, Marlisa Embrey, Dianna Boyles and Christina Rasmussen have taken turns looking after him and one of them always stays with him.
