front-runner with an exuberant jumping style. Point-to-point winners Midnight Entry and Military Pride will have their work cut out for them, as will maiden Itchy Brother.
The Ben Venue attracted five, including last year’s winner High Speed Drill and champion point-topoint rider Jill Waterman. Rob Banner and his Monster Monster, Brian Fitzgerald and Diamond Gold and Matt vanderWoude all have the advantage of one race from last week under their belts, and Jim Whitner’s Beau Rebel is tough at the weight, too.
All entries but High Speed Drill are in at 170 pounds; High Speed Drill, as a previous winner, will carry 180.
Hurdle racing returns after an eight-year hiatus to the hillside Rappahannock course. Colonial Downs, Virginia’s first parimutuel racetrack, is sponsoring the rental of “national fences” (plastic and foam. obstacles for hurdle runners) at all 10 point-to-points this spring. With that offer, Rappahannock decided to add two brush races to the program. One division of novices and a series race for owner-riders will be contested.
Rounding out the day are events for maidens, ladies and foxhunters over timber, and two open flat races. A pony race opens the day at noon, with the great hound race slated after the horses have cleared the course.
