Crown Heads of Europe and was more popular overseas while he lived. He did very well financially for a black composer during that time, but lived a while in Europe and spent almost everything he earned there. He died a pauper and was buried in a pauper’s grave in Philadelphia, Pa.
The Lions Clubs discovered this and had a marker put on his grave and established the annual Bland Music Competition in recognition of his achievements and contribution to American music.
This year’s competition in Rappahannock drew 10 participants: Vocalists Robin Oyster, 10, Jennifer Starr, 12, Rachel Lucas, 11, and Margo Haynes, 15; Pianists, Nicole Espinola, 7, Wendy Gillis, 12, Ben Kelly, 11, Jami Gillis, 14, and James Kelly, 14, along with violinist Dale Forrester, 11.
In particular the performances by Dale Forrester, who played with a maturity belying his years, and Nicole Espinola, who played the piano beautifully despite the fact that she was almost standing in order to reach the peddles, were high spots of the afternoon.
“There used to be many more vocalists than instrumentalists,” Mr. Scott said. “Now it’s the other way around.”
