Conference with 20 Rappahannock tenth-grade students. Of special note as weli were: the Manassas DARE/Air-show field trip; the outstanding DARE/Field Day Event (to which over 30 exhibitors agreed to come to our County); and the wellreceived DARE Parent Program, held for the first time this past Fall.
This fifth grade class is comprised of the first students Capt. Brown taught at RCES while they were in Kindergarten six years ago.,
Throughout the year the DARE students learned valuable skills in resisting, “saying no,” to drug and alcohol use and to violence. They learned about the consequences of using illegal substances and the physical, emotional and legal consequences that follow. Other topics studied were influences of peer pressure, violence in the media, maintaining self-esteem, and coping with stress while growing up in today’s society. As one of their assignments the students wrote personal essays about how and why they should avoid drugs, alcohol and violence in their daily lives. The essay winner were Mel Torrance, Bobby Jo Brown, Kyle Robinson and Chris Starks. Essay winners were awarded medallions to wear and DARE clocks. Prizes were also given to the three students who created the best Virginia license plates conveying the DARE philosophy. Winners were:
