Jeffrey Woodward and Buddy Howington, of the Castleton Volunteer Fire Department, were injured last week when the fire department’s freight liner tanker overturned in an accident on March 1 at 12:16 p.m.
Woodward, 23, was driving the tanker and took a curve too fast at the intersection of Route 618 and 649, according to a report by Virginia State Trooper S.M. Knick.
Although Woodward was apparently well under the speed limit he could not maintain control of the tanker as it came around the curve. The tanker was to the right of the. curve and struck the guard ^ rail, wove to the left, then back to the right and overturned several times.
Both men had bruises and abrasions and Howington suffered a broken arm as a result of the accident. They were taken to Culpeper Memorial Hospital and later released.
Woodward has been charged with reckless driving in the incident. The tanker is worth between $90,000 to $100,000. The tanker was considered totaled with an estimated damage of $40,000 according to Knick. The estimated cost of damage to the guard rail is $1,400.
