Pines are defined by the length and number of their leaves, the needles. White pines, pinus strobus, are elegant trees, frequently planted where pines are wanted. .The needles of this pine can be five inches long and there are five in a bundle. It’s easy to remember: W-h-i-t-e has five letters and each bluish-green needle sports a fine white line.

Pinus virginiana has only two grayish-green needles in a bundle; each less than three inches long. They are unique in that each needle is twisted and grows out at unusual angles. All this adds to the “templelike nobility” of the tree, “full of its own music and incense.” Those fine words are by Donald Culross Peattie, he was referring to the splendid pungent smell of a clump of Virginia
