He is also careful to avoid faddish extremes in his breeding program. “Part of my philosophy,” he explained, “is to stay pretty close to the middle of the road .” The McNears raise purebred commercial black Angus and Angus-cross cattle. Though they sold about 50 adult cows last fall because of the hay shortage caused by last summer’s drought, they primarily market feeder calves at both the spring and fall sales. McNear is now looking for some replacement heifers to bring his herd back up to its optimum size.
