innocent. The students rigged a “water torture” by putting pennies and a single dime in a barrel filled with water. The accused had to retrieve the dime within a specified period of time. To everyone’s amazement, he did, and was set free.
Another highlight of the tourney is the pancake race commemorating Shrove (or Fat) Tuesday. Fat Tuesday (Mardi gras in French, the international language of medieval Europe), is the last day before Lent, a 40-day season of fasting. In addition to engaging in wholesale gluttony, people tried to use up all available fat so it would not go to waste. Frying the pancakes was a way to do so. “There is an art,” explained Lynn-Tucker, “to making a pancake that can fall off a spoon and not disintegrate.” It took her several years to get the recipe just right.
