Unless you are an avid fisherman you wouldn’t understand the enticement having your own fly fishing shop. Paul Kearney and Steve Tenney thought about it for several years and when Cliff Miller offered them space in the old Sperryville School Annex they jumped at the opportunity. The Thornton River Fly Shop opens this Saturday.
Keeping the school house theme, the new business partners began restoring the building on Feb. 1. Tenney, who owned a restoration business in Alexandria, began by adding a dividing wall to separate their space from the other half occupied by furniture painter, Cindy Eison. Instead of installing drywall, they matched the tongue and groove paneling, painted the walls a pale golden yellow and highlighted the trim a distinctive dark green.
