The next stage — the deciduous forest — is set. Hickories and oaks find the soil created by the maples and poplars to their liking and take over to eventually produce a climax forest. Even this is not so stable as it appears. As older trees die and are felled by wind or ice, the summer canopy opens and saplings, curtailed in growth by dense shade, take advantage of the space.
So, the Virginia pine is just a step along the slow way most of us are too impatient to observe. Besides that, we lack the time; our lives are too short.
In an open field, the Virginia pine makes its cragged, unsymmetricai .-tand and creates a sharply etched silhouette against the winter sky. It’s those I most admire.
