As reported in the
Rappahannock News Feb. 25, I appeared at a recent meeting of the Rappahannock County Planning Commission to express my concern over plans for a retreat and recreation center along the south bank of the Hughes River near my Slate Mills neighborhood.
Together with Mary Bittinger, I spoke for a number of neighbors and others concerned with the protection of this scenic and still unspoiled river in a largely agricultural community.
So far no details of plans have been confirmed by the Northern Virginia church group pursuing the retreat and recreation center project. It may be assumed, however, that the plan will be the same or a variant of the one presented last year for a site near Huntly.
That plan was rejected by the Rappahannock County authorities after a public hearing.
Residents of this county are now faced with a renewed attempt by the same group to realize a totally unsuitable project in this area, albeit on a site that is just outside the jurisdiction of Rappahannock County.
