pines in the heat of a Virginia summer and the soft sighing of the wind through the clustered needles. Peattie’s Natural History of the Trees is a book I recommend to anyone who loves trees.

The Virginia or scrub pine is now valued for pulp wood. Does anyone plant them or do they just distribute themselves and start the march of plant succession from broom sedge to mature deciduous forest? Abandoned farm land, if left alone, will soon produce a crop of seedlings of pinus virginiana; they eventually become dense and crowd each other for space and light.

A monoculture of our native pine will result if left to its own purposes. It won’t last long (how long is “long” in nature?) because it will eventually be disrupted when the seed of a red maple is whirled in among the pines by the wind. Tulip poplar
