fire on my property. I told myself it couldn’t be much of a fire, for brick doesn’t bum — I was wrong. Everything burned — except the brick. Four brick walls — the brick as beautiful as it was from the start — the light sandy or rose color of the soil. I looked at those denuded walls and wept.
A few days later Mimi Cantwell studied these very special brick walls and suddenly she said, “Why not a secret garden?” Of course! Hallelujah! What a fabulous way to honor those bricks and the spirit of the idyllic world towards which our little community had aspired.
Some of you, hearing of the fire, have asked if there’s anything you can do to help. The answer is “yes!” Bring over a pail of good earth or some lovely miniature tree or shrub or flower to help me to resurrect new life, new beauty, between these beloved walls.
