As Lee explained, many of the county’s farms are made up of smaller tracts and, if a farm is sold to a developer, it might be subdivided into the twenty-five acre minimum parcels as well as the smaller parcels that pre-existed.
He also said that there should be greater oversight on farm use designation — many large parcels receive the lower farm tax rate when they are not really being used for agriculture.
This practice, he said, results in lower tax revenues for the county which could result in higher tax rates that would put more financial pressure on legitimate farms.
