At this point, Mr. Miller introduced Mary Heinricht, the Mid Atlantic Director of the American Farmland Trust.

Ms Heinricht was implemental in developing the first PDR program in the state of Virginia. She was hired to help the Virginia Beach area to save existing farmland.

Ms. Heinricht explained that each county has many options in developing plans to manage development to protect agricultural areas. Purchasing development rights, when used in conjunction with easements can economically be feasible to many areas.

Ms. Heinricht outlined the economics of the Virginia Beach program and explained the importance of targeting important agricultural land.

After many questions and comments from members the meeting was adjourned. The Rappahannock Farmers’ Association would like to thank Mr. Miller and Ms. Heinricht for a very informative and educational evening.
