The Rappahannock County Board of Zoning r Appeals held its monthly meeting on April 1 at the County Extension Office. The board considered a variance request by Frank Berta of Castelton. Berta requested the variance so that he may add a garage and workshop to the end of his house.
Present at the meeting were board chairman Alexander Sharp, Board members Jennifer Matthews and Louis G. Zindel III, and County Zoning Administrator John McCarthy. Berta and his wife, Joann, explained to the board that they need a variance change to 29 feet because they are not able to build on any other part of the house.
Mr. Berta cuts wood for his wife to make dolls. He currently uses the carport, and wants an enclosed workshop so that he could work out of the weather.
One neighbor, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Sabatini, contacted Mr. McCarthy to say that they had no problem with the request. Another neighbor, Gary Anthes, wrote Mr. McCarthy in opposition of the variance. He complained of noise coming from the Berta residence.
