BEN VENUE — Trainer Mairead Carr was pleased when Hay Has It won at first asking over timber in February. But she thought it was just a fluke.
Placing second to a sanctioned winner the following week upped the Hay Halo gelding’s stock in his conditioner’s eyes, but she still was uncertain of his quality.
Not anymore.
Anthony Montesano’s dark bay dominated the Leeds Don open timber at Saturday’s Old Dominion Hounds Point-toPoint under a hand ride from jockey Woods Winants. Eight lengths was the recorded margin, but it looked like it could have been much, much more.
“I am just thrilled with him," said Carr, an Ireland native who trains from Hickory Tree Farm in Middleburg. “His Casanova win started to look better when he was so close to [Age of Flight at Blue Ridge.] But at Old Dominion, he really showed me he might be the one. He just might be something special.”
