species: Purple Martins, Bam, Rough-winged and Tree Swallows. These birds perform aerial gymnastics in the spring and summer sky as they scoop up mosquitoes, flies, flying beetles, ants, bees and even flying grasshoppers. Swallows zoom through the air with their mouths open for a good reason.
In spring, Tree Swallows return before the air is filled with flying insects and subsist on barriers and fruits and even weed seeds until the temperature climbs enough to allow the hatching of insect eggs. This particular swallow is the only member of the family to commonly winter in the United States.
