McCoy, Andy Wilson up, led early in the three-mile event, with Winants steadying Hay Has It in second until jumping to the lead a half-mile from home.
“This is just his third start over timber,” Carr said. “We still don’t know how much he can do.”
Judging by Winants’ handful of horse at the wire, Hay Has It may have found his calling over timber.
Carr formerly trained the Virginia-bred gelding — nephew to Punch Line, Virginia’s Horse of the Year in 1998 — for breeder Robin Richards to run over hurdles as a 3-year-old. Stakes placed, he had an ankle operation last year, and changed hands to run in Montesano’s colors in 1998.
“His sire, Hay Halo, moved to Texas to stand this spring season,” Carr noted. “They may have moved him [from his former home on a Maryland stud farm] too soon. He’s got winners everywhere from six furlongs to three miles this year. I think his runners are just sort of late to develop. They’ll like him out in Texas, though.”
