Statistics Service reported in its July 12 Crop Production report that Virginia growers expected to harvest 340,000 acres of com for grain.
This figure has been reduced by 20,000 acres, or 6 percent, to 320,000 acres. Excessive heat combined with prolonged dry conditions have reduced the amount of forage available to livestock herds.
Many corn producers have decided to cut com intended for grain as silage or greenchop for livestock feed. Growers expect to average 80 bushels per acre, down four bushels per acre from 1998.
If realized, this yield is expected to be the lowest in 10 years, with the exception of 1993, where prolonged drought reduced com yields to 60 bushels per acre.
