A1 Kellert observed that Virginia is like France, in that there are varying seasons. You can have spectacular years and mediocre years for wine. “That’s what makes it exciting,” says Kellert.
The Kellerts refer to their wine business as “a hobby that got out of control.” Al’s first experiment in wine, which occurred in 1969 while the Kellerts were living in Illinois, was less than spectacular. However, it gave A1 a taste for wine making.
Six years later A1 and Cheryl were living in Virginia. In 1981, they planted their first two vines in the backyard of their Dale City home. Over the next four years, two vines grew to over 100 and took most of the Kellert’s yard and part of a neighbor’s. Family and friends knew this vineyard as “Kellert Krest” and “Kellert Cellars.”
A major milestone was achieved in 1984, when their first wines were made. At that point, the Kellert’s realized that this could be more than just a hobby and began looking for property out in the country. In 1986, they purchased the property they now own in Amissville and began to move.
Every vine was physically moved and stored in stables on the property until March, 1987, when they were planted. Winery construction also started during this period. The stable was gutted, and the winery was constructed from the inside out.
