Wingfield added that, as of Aug. 16, the Sperryville area has received less than six tenths of an inch of rain for the month of August. As far as this year’s drought, he said that “I’ve never seen anything like this.” Wingfield was born during the Depression.
He also said that there is no doubt that leaves have already started to fall as a result of the drought. He stressed that colors may come early, but that we cannot be sure what to expect at this point. Wingfield further observed that some of the best colors have followed dry summers.
