Acres planted to soybeans is forecast at 480,000, down 30.000 or 6 percent from the June forecast. During the week ending May 30 only 36 percent of the soybean acres had been planted.
This previous forecast was based on how many acres growers intended to plant. Since over one-half of Virginia’s soybean acres are planted behind another crop, usually a small grain crop, growers were still optimistic.
With soybean planting now complete, growers reported they were unable to plant as many acres as intended. Dry, hard soils prevented planting in many fields.
Producers currently expect to harvest 460,000 acres, down 20.000 or 4 percent from 1998. Growers are optimistic they will realize 24 bushels per acre, up one bushel from 1998. Production is expected to total slightly over 11 million bushels.
