The hot diet trend is now the “protein power” diet. But, the goal of any diet should be to promote optimal health. Pound per pound, carbohydrates and proteins contain the same number of calories. If one is to gain weight, it is largely a question of taking in more calories than you are expending. - -I personally know people who have lost weight on a high protein diet. They have simply eliminated unhealthy sugars and refined carbohydrates. However, the weight loss is rarely permanent. Just as in most diet fads, no one can ihaintain such a restricted and Unbalanced diet for any length ojf time. Weight loss requires exercise and stress reduction.

And I am concerned about the long term effects of this diet. The biggest problem is the freedom to gorge on high fat foods such as cheese, whole milk, sour cream, butter, bacon, eggs, fatty meat, etc. It is okay to splurge on special occasions, but it should not be an everyday regime. If your diet consists largely of animal proteins, you are shorting yourself fiber, essential fatty acids, anti oxidants, and other vitamins and minerals. These important nutrients are primary in plant foods.

The typical

American diet

I A typical American diet consists of 90 percent cooked, processed, packaged, adulterated, irradiated and, possibly, genetically engineered foods. It is filled with chemicals and preservatives, grown in nutrient depleted soil, and stored on- shelves for long periods of time, resulting in massive nutritional loss. All of this adds up to a “dead food diet.” The body cannot build strong new cells and maintain a healthy immune system to prevent disease, when it is receiving lifeless food.
