China is the number one producer of peanuts, followed by India; the United States is third in major growers of peanuts. In 1985, Virginia produced 139,000 tons of peanuts.
Every part of a peanut is useful, including the dry shells, which are turned into fodder for cattle. The hulls are also used in making wallboard and as cork substitutes.
