In order to write about peanuts, I had to do a considerable amount of reading about this interesting and very useful plant that was so widely grown and eaten in central North Carolina, where I grew up. The historical, economic and botanical facts are fascinating and I was ignorant of many of them.
In a linguistic class at the University of North Carolina, I learned that “goober,” one of the many names for the peanut in the south, had its origin in Africa. From that I assumed that peanuts originated on that continent.
