The Washington schoolhouse and property, sold at auction recently, was purchased by Col. Earl Holmes for the high bid of $20,500. The sale has been approved by the local school board but must be confirmed by Judge Elliott Marshall. In a photograph David L. Pullen of Washington, poses proudly with the 499-pound black bear which he bagged Thanksgiving Day in Gid Brown Hollow. He spotted the huge beast while hunting in the mountain on his father’s farm and fired once with his 270 rifle. The animal went several steps and sat down, then got up and started toward him. He fired the second shot and felled the bear. It was necessary to get the farm tractor and haul Bruin out the mountain. Plans have been made by the Sperryville Fire Department for the construction of a porch on the new Sperryville fire house. The front porch will be erected in memory of the late Robert F. Estes, who served the fire company and community for many years, and will Lear a plaque dedicated to him. Mr. Estes was president of Sperryville Fire Department for years and was instrumental in the construction of the fire house on a pay as you go plan. The office of the Rappahannock County Welfare Department have been moved from the courthouse to the building formerly occupied by Watts Barbershop on Main Street.
