Brazil is the original source of peanuts. Portuguese explorers took the plant to Africa and it was brought to the New World — Virginia, to be specific — by the first African-Americans who landed in Jamestown in the 17th century.

The peanut is a member of the pea family, or Leguminosae, along with such diverse plants as red bud, locust, soy beans, clover, and lima beans. The yellow flowers of peanut plants lie close to the earth and once they are fertilized, the developing seeds are pushed into the ground where they mature and develop into peanuts.

• Girls’ Volleyball Season at RCHS begins this week. The first game will be held at Luray High School at

6:30 on Thursday, Dec. 2. j The next two games, on , Dec. 6 and 7, will be at * RCHS. 1

• Boys’ Basketball Season is beginning as well. The first game will be on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at Page County High School. The first home game will be on Dec. 14 against Page at RCHS. Games begin at 6 p.m.

• We wish all of our promising young athletes the very best as they begin these new seasons.

• RCHS homecoming is just around the corner! If you are a RCHS student or former student and would like to be a part of this wonderful event, please make plans to attend. Festivities will take place the weekend of Dec. 17.
